The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources
The world relies on a variety of energy sources. Fossil-based fuels such as natural gas, petroleum and coal–accounted to more than 80 percent of the energy consumed in the year 2018. Renewables, such as solar power, wind power, biomass and hydroelectricity, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is 5 percent. Different countries have different sources of energy to meet environmental and economic requirements.
Nature is a rich source of energy in many forms, including sunlight winds, waves oceans, and more. When harnessed, and transformed into more efficient forms of energy, such as electricity or heat, these are referred to as primary sources. When those energies are exhausted, they turn into nonrenewable energy sources.
The environment is damaged by many fossil fuels, and also other non-renewable sources of energy. For example mining for oil may degrade the world’s forests. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) can cause earthquakes and water pollution. The combustion of coal releases carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming.
Fortunately there are many promising sources of energy are sustainable and renewable. Wind, solar and hydropower could produce, for instance, electricity without the need to dig for new sources.
Other sustainable energy sources are gaining momentum, such as the wave and tidal power. But, in order to be utilized on a massive scale these technologies require efficient distribution networks. This requires the use of non-renewable energy sources to construct these networks. These sources aren’t able to fulfill the majority of our energy demands. It is important to keep in mind that prices for renewable energy equipment have decreased significantly in the past few years, and efficiency is increasing rapidly.
